Week 10: Miracles, Wheat Deliveries, and Christmas in October

Good morning friends, family, and whomever has the pleasure (or chore) of reading this email. It's been a semi uneventful week here in Holsworthy, but let's get started with some fun facts. First, a member here, Nigel Manners, was in the original "meet the mormons" film. It's called "a plan for a prophet",  was made in 1965, and is on YouTube. It's fantastically retro and an interesting watch. Second, our area that my companion and I cover is about 3,000 square miles. So yeah, it's big! Needless to say, we put a lot of miles on our car :-) speaking of cars, this is the third one, I DROVE THIS WEEK AND WE DIDN'T DIE. That's one of the miracles. Other than being terribly stressful, it went pretty well! I'm just getting used to it all. With time I'll be a pro. It doesn't help that most of the roads are only big enough for one car...and they are two way roads...and the speed limit is 60. But it's fine, I'm fine, everything's fine :-)

This week we had a miracle happen. Three weeks ago, we challenged a member to invite someone to meet with us and hear our message. She accepted. This week she said someone had accepted her invitation! We met with them and taught them on Saturday. It was a tender time with this couple. They lost a daughter in July and are grieving her loss. I know that kind of pain all to well and I was so grateful that I got to share my beliefs about seeing our families after this life. It was a lesson full of the spirit. Not to mention it was exactly a year after my brother passed away. We are meeting with them tomorrow. Please keep Dawn and Steven in your prayers, as they are going through a lot of other hard times at the moment as well.

This morning we got a call from our branch President asking if we could drive out to the middle of nowhere and pick up some wheat from a single sister who wantednto get rid of it. So we did. It was in the middle of nowhere. It was a rubbish bin full of sealed packets of wheat. It was not as much wheat as I expected but it was still a fair amount of wheat. Then we dropped the wheat off at another members house. Who also live in the middle of nowhere. So yeah. I'm a wheat delivery man now. It was good fun.

Happy Belated Halloween everyone. We got to carve pumpkins with the youth last night. And yes that says what you think it does. Deck the halls everyone because Christmas is coming.

British Food of the Week: cottage pie - now this is heavenly. It's basically a mix of beef, veg, mushrooms and everything like that that is put in a pie tin and covered with mashed potatoes and then baked. It's delicious. It's really good. Ugh. I want it again!

British wood of the week: Hoover - vacuum or to vacuum; "take your shoes off, I just hoovered"

Scripture of the Week: This is actually a talk from Bonnie L. Oscarson called "The needs before us". There's a quote from it that I've been thinking about a lot. She says "Heavenly Father may have placed those who need us closest to us, knowing that we are best suited to meet their needs." I know that this is true for me. Especially given the past year, I know that God placed people near me that helped me when I needed it most. I love you all, and take some time to serve your neighbor. They may be there because you need to help them, but they may also be there to help you.

I love you all and know you are praying for me. I appreciate it so much. Thank you for your emails and letters. I love them and they make my day. Have a great week everyone and know that you are so capable of greatness.

I wanted to leave you with one final thought. It seems that on my hardest days, the sunsets are more beautiful. I know God is with us all. I hope you can see that this week. Love,

Elder McKinley
